Multi-flash Hummingbird Photography
Hummingbirds can be remarkable photographic subjects. They have a variety of sizes, shapes, behaviors, colors that can border on the unreal, and are relatively tolerant of people. However, they are also very small, fly rapidly and very erratically (including backward), have wings that can beat over 4000 times a minute and, like many animals, are not always easy to find especially at distances where photography is realistic and tend to be in areas with very cluttered backgrounds. These features can make it difficult to get clear, sharp photos that show their fine details and colors well. One solution is to find an area where they are concentrated in significant numbers, such as along a migration pathway, set up a feeding station, and use a multiple flash set up to freeze their motion. The set up also allows for easy manipulation of the background. This talk will discuss how this can be done and will show way too many pictures of the result.
